SASCA B win to end their season on a high note

After a tough start to the season for our B team in the adult evening league (the first post-pandemic season was always going to be a little tough because our junior players had almost zero experience of league chess), our juniors found their stride in the second half of the season.

They pulled off a surprising 3.5-2.5 win against table-topping University B in May, before beating Sheffield Deaf and coming within a whisker against Woodseats C and Ecclesall C.

For the final match of the season, we travelled to Darnall & Handsworth C. We played an all-junior team, with Milana and Mengzheng both not playing. Both teams used the opportunity to give some new players a go.

That left Xiaorui on top board, with an entertaining game eventually going against him. Billy (U7) made his league debut, going down to defeat on bottom board. But Rishab won a convincing game on board 2. Patrik, who hasn’t played many league matches this season, also won on 3. Zilu notched up his first win of the season on board 4, converting an endgame up an exchange, whilst Emirasan was able to record his first ever league win on 5.

A 4-2 victory overall wasn’t really the point (the match for both teams being more about providing  opportunities rather than the final score), but it was nice for the team to rise off the bottom of the table – and for our players to see some results after their hard work this season.
